As EKING Gelatin's market scale has further expanded in recent years, our exchanges with new clients and colleagues have shown us that gelatin—an ancient raw material—continues to undergo fresh upgrades, showing vibrant vitality across ever-expanding fields of application. Below, we have summarized the new applications of gelatin that have emerged in recent years:
Medical and Biomaterials Fields
- Drug Carriers and Sustained-Release Systems: Using gelatin microspheres as drug carriers (such as PMX-53 gelatin composite particles) can help treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis. Surface-wrinkled gelatin/hyaluronic acid composite microspheres—prepared by controlling parameters like stirring speed and phase ratio—enable precise regulation of drug release. Additionally, gelatin microspheres used as embolic agents (such as carrageenan and gelatin composite microspheres) are applied in treating tumors and other diseases, offering advantages like high drug-loading capacity and adjustable breakdown time. Cross-linked gelatin is also used as a carrier for biologically active substances to achieve controlled release.
- Tissue Engineering and Bone Repair: Gelatin is used to prepare composite scaffold materials. For example, hydroxyapatite composite scaffolds synthesized in situ using gelatin and carboxymethyl chitosan as templates are well-suited for bone repair. Silk fibroin-gelatin blend films feature good biocompatibility and can be used for wound repair, artificial tissue, and cell culture. Gelatin microspheres are also used to reinforce bone cement, aiming to boost its structural strength.
- Antibacterial and Protective Films: Currently, gelatin-ZnO nanocomposite films (featuring antioxidant and antibacterial properties) and gelatin/nanosilver/chitosan derivative composite films (offering good biocompatibility along with antibacterial and germicidal performance) have been successfully developed.
Environmental Governance and Agricultural Fields
- Water Treatment: By using gelatin for the synergistic immobilization of nanoscale zero-valent iron, sodium alginate/gelatin-coated nanoscale zero-valent iron materials have been created to effectively remove azo dyes and heavy metal pollutants (such as cadmium and lead) from water.
- Pesticide Removal: Leveraging gelatin's strong adsorption properties, gelatin hydrolysate pesticide removers have been developed to remove pesticide residues from the surfaces of fruits and vegetables, offering high efficiency, eco-friendliness, and low cost.
Material Modification and Manufacturing Technology Upgrades
- Material Modification: By introducing new cross-linking agents (such as cellulose-based macromolecular cross-linkers, diimide salts, and bis-quaternary ammonium compounds) to modify gelatin and its film materials, researchers have significantly improved their thermal stability, degradation resistance, light-blocking capabilities, water resistance, and hydrophobicity.
- Preparation Process Optimization: In terms of production techniques, innovative methods such as ultrasound-microwave extraction, ion-exchange resin processing, enzymatic methods, and microfluidic droplet manipulation techniques have been adopted to improve gelatin quality, shorten production cycles, and reduce environmental pollution.
